Roster Move: Hayden Wesneski placed on IL, reliever Hunter Bigge recalled |
CHICAGO, Ill. – The Chicago Cubs today placed right-handed pitcher Hayden Wesneski on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm strain and recalled right-handed pitcher Hunter Bigge from Triple-A Iowa.
Bigge, 26, made his major league debut July 9 in Baltimore (0 ER/1.0 IP) and has allowed one run in 2.1 IP (3.86 ERA) with three strikeouts in three relief outings for Chicago in 2024. The righthander is 1-0 with a 0.77 ERA (1 ER/11.2 IP) in 11 games with Triple-A Iowa this season. He is holding hitters to a .054 batting average (2-for-37) and is a perfect six-for-six in save opportunities. Originally drafted by the Cubs in the 12th round of the 2019 Draft out of Harvard University, Bigge is in his fourth season in the Cubs organization. Wesneski, 26, is 3-6 with a 3.94 ERA (27 ER/61.2 IP) in 25 games (seven starts) for Chicago in 2024. The Cubs play the Arizona Diamondbacks at Wrigley Field today at 6:15 p.m. CT in a game that can be seen on FOX and heard on 670 the Score and WRTO 1200. Regarding Hayden Wesneski, Cubs manager Craig Counsell said the team is not overly concerned about the injury. The hope is that Wesneski can resume throwing relatively soon, the way Mark Leiter Jr. bounced back from a recent forearm issue.
