Javier Assad injury update

Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell recently announced that pitcher Javier Assad experienced shoulder soreness at the start of spring training.

Pitching coach Tommy Hottovy provided more details on the injury.

“It wasn’t anything like an acute-throw-injury type of thing,” Hottovy said. “It was more of just something that kind of came up after the fact. I know we still have to find out exactly what we’re dealing with, but when that happens and it happens in that fashion, it gives me a little more room for optimism.”

Assad underwent an MRI on Tuesday, and Counsell shared positive news—results showed only a mild strain.

"I don't think it's going to be many days that we're without throwing," Counsell said. "So, good news. The MRI was good news."
