Cubs Corner with Anthony Pasquale: Cubs 2021 recap, Prospects to watch, Offseason Talk

by - Staff Writer -

On the latest edition of the Cubs Corner, presented by Coach’s Bar and Grill, Anthony recapped the Cubs 2021 season and looked forward to what the offseason may bring.

*Coach’s Bar and Grill is located at 6169 N Northwest Highway on the Northwest Side of Chicago and is open for business this fall. Check out their website or Facebook page for deals during bears games and more.*

Anthony began the episode by recounting the NL Central Standings:

Milwaukee Brewers 95-67 CLINCHED DIVISION WIN

St. Louis Cardinals 90-72 (5 games back) CLINCHED SECOND WILD CARD

Cincinnati Reds 83-79 (12 games back) ELIMINATED

Chicago Cubs 71-91 (24 games back) ELIMINATED

Pittsburgh Pirates 61-101 (34 games back) ELIMINATED

Any recap of this season could not go without talking about the massive firesale that happened in July, completely altering the identity of the Cubs roster and core, and restocking the farm system — leading to the product on the field being subpar. The Cubs said goodbye in July to Andrew Chafin, Ryan Tepera, Craig Kimbrel, Joc Pederson, Jake Marisnick, Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez, Kris Bryant, and Trevor Williams at the trade deadline.

The rest of the season was much different, but Anthony was sure to highlight the pleasant performances from Rafael Ortega, Patrick Wisdom, Frank Schwindel, and Ian Happ in the second half — as well as the excitement that pitchers Justin Steele, Adbert Alzolay, Keegan Thompson and Adrian Sampson provide to a Cubs team that is looking to revamp a pitching rotation.

Plus, Anthony talked briefly of the Cubs prospects who were acquired at the trade deadline and have been in the system — potentially cornerstones of the next great Cubs team.

With the playoffs beginning, Anthony also mentioned former Cubs in the playoffs, such as Jon Lester, Anthony Rizzo, DJ Lemahieu, Aroldis Chapman, Gleyber Torres, Kyle Schwarber, Martin Maldonado, Billy McKinney, Billy Hamilton, Dylan Cease, Eloy Jimenez, Craig Kimbrel, Ryan Tepera, Daniel Vogelbach, Jesse Chavez, Terrance Gore, Joc Pederson, Jorge Soler, Tommy La Stella, and Kris Bryant.

That and more on the latest edition of the Cubs Corner.

As always this episode is available on Apple Podcasts, Soundcloud, and the CubsHQ website.
