Roster Moves: Cubs place Trevor Williams on 10-day IL, recall pitcher |
CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today placed right-handed pitcher Trevor Williams on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to May 28) with appendicitis and recalled right-handed pitcher Kohl Stewart from Triple-A Iowa.
Stewart, 26, will wear number 37 and make today’s start in Chicago’s 1:20 p.m. CT game against the San Diego Padres at Wrigley Field. In four starts this season with Iowa, Stewart is 1-2 with a 3.68 ERA (9 ER/22.0 IP) and five walks compared to 23 strikeouts and a 0.96 WHIP. This is his second stint with Chicago as he was recalled as the team’s “27th man” for the nightcap of a doubleheader against the Dodgers on May 4 but did not appear. The six-foot three-inch Stewart signed a one-year major league contract with the Cubs in January. He is 4-3 with a 4.79 ERA (33 ER/62.0 IP) in 17 major league games (six starts) with the Twins in 2018-19. Stewart was 2-1 with a 3.68 ERA (15 ER/36.2 IP) in eight games (four starts) for Minnesota at the age of 23 in his MLB debut season in 2018. In 2019, he appeared in nine games (two starts) in seven stints with the Twins, going 2-2 with a 6.39 ERA (18 ER/25.1 IP). Stewart signed with Baltimore as a free agent in December of 2019 but did not appear in a game for the Orioles as he opted out of the 2020 campaign due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Stewart owns a 3.61 ERA (274 ER/683.2 IP) with a 40-42 record and two complete games in 135 career minor league games, all but six as a starter, with 264 walks and 509 strikeouts. He was originally selected by the Twins in the first round (fourth overall) of the 2013 draft out of St. Pius X High School in Houston, Texas. Williams, 29, is 3-2 with a 5.36 ERA (26 ER/43.2 IP) in 10 starts for Chicago this season. He has walked 20 and struck out 49 batters.
