Not good news for the Northsiders.

Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras was hit in the left ankle on a pitch during the eighth inning of Thursday's game against the Cardinals.

Contreras ran to first base but was certainly in pain.

Cubs manager David Ross came out to see him and he was removed from the game walking off under his own power.

Rafael Ortega came into the game to pinch-run for Contreras.

Contreras homered earlier in the game.

We will update you when we hear about his injury from Cubs officials.

Update: Cubs manager David Ross says x-rays were negative on Contreras after being hit in the ankle.

“When you get hit like that it gets scary because there are a lot of fragile bones that go into ankles or hands or the elbow,” said Contreras in postgame interviews.

“My ankle’s a little sore,” he said. “I’m looking forward to getting back in the lineup, not tomorrow but the next day. I was off tomorrow anyway.”
