Happy Hanukkah to those who celebrate.

Cubs news and notes

2019 Cubs’ Opening day: 116 days.

Eddie Butler: The former Cubs’ right-hander is the latest American to set sail for Korea. Butler got a one-year, $1M deal (the max allowed for first-year foreign players) to play for the NC Dinos. Butler is joined by former Marlins righty, Drew Rucinski, who received the same deal from the Dinos.

Anthony Rizzo: The Anthony Rizzo Foundation raised an astonishing, record setting, $1.2M for their seventh-annual Walk-Off for Cancer. With over one-thousand participating, walkers included the Marjory Stoneman-Douglas HS baseball team.

Ron Santo: Today marks the eighth anniversary of the passing of former Cubs’ third baseman Ron Santo. On a personal note, my father (ironically, also named Ron) passed away four years ago today.

News and rumors from around the league

Dallas Keuchel: Several teams are looking at trying to obtain Keuchel, with the Blue Jays and the Braves being among the latest to join in the hunt. Reports say the jays are unlikely to get him, but I wouldn’t put it past the Braves to be in the running.

Yusei Kikuchi: Starting tomorrow, one of Japan’s brightest stars will enter the ranks of players looking to be signed by MLB, as the twenty-seven-year-old southpaw will be offered by the Seibu Lions of Japan’s Nippon Professional baseball. Negotiations will begin on December fifth.

J.P. Ricciardi: Former Blue Jays general manager and Mets special assistant J.P. Ricciardi is finalizing a new contract to join the Giants’ front office as a senior advisor.

Jean Segura: The soon-to-be former Mariners shortstop made a little money today. To facilitate the trade to Philly (details below), Segura earned $1M for waiving his no-trade clause.

Brewers: The Brewers didn’t think much of 2B Jonathon Schoop. In a recent interview with Milwaukee GM, David Stearns Schoop’s acquisition was summed up as “a bad deal, and that’s on me.”

Dodgers: The Dodgers announced today that they had extended the contract of manager, Dave Roberts through the end of the 2022 season.

Mariners: Seattle’s mission to dismantle and rebuild the team continues. After the blockbuster Cano-Diaz trade over the weekend, the Mariners are now looking to unload veteran third-baseman, Kyle Seager.

Phillies: The Phillies are now reported to have completed a trade with the Mariners for SS Jean Segura and RHP Juan Nicasio and LHP James Pazos including options and buyouts, the trio is owed a total of $102M. Philly will send 1B/3B/C Carlos Santana and SS J.P Crawford as part of the deal. The Phillies are still pursuing Machado, and have said they’ll use Machado at third, Segura at short if they land both. As for moving Santana, they plan on moving Rhys Hoskins to first-base, creating an OF hole for Harper, Pollock or Brantley.

Yankees: NY GM Brian Cashman now says that reports of the Yankees interest in J.T. Realmuto were “False, completely false.” Baseball insider, Jon Heyman first reported that the Yankees were open to trading Gary Sanchez for Realmuto, but that the Marlins wanted other significant pieces as well.
