Cubs’ news and notes

Cubs’ Opening Day: 34 days. (March 28 @ Rangers)

First Spring Training game: TOMORROW. (Brewers vs. Cubs at Sloan Park). The Cubs are then due to take on the Giants on Sunday, the Dodgers on Monday and the D-Backs on Tuesday.

Javy Baez: Although the announcement came only today, congratulations are for Mr. & Mrs. Javier Baez. The couple tied the knot back on January 26.

Ben Zobrist: After a week’s delay for personal issues, Ben has finally made it to Mesa and says he’s excited to be there.

In-Forcement Team: The Cubs got creative today, using their “In-forcement team” to issue “tickets” to fans. Notice I said “tickets” and not “citations,” that’s because these tickets are for Cubs’ home games.

Birthday wishes: In addition to Brian Duensing who turned 36 today, also celebrating is former Cubs’ beat reporter, Carrie Muskat, who turned 63.

Jake Arietta: Former Cubs’ pitcher Jake Arietta says that even entering his eleventh spring training season, the butterflies are still fluttering every time he takes the mound.

Promotion: The Cubs have promoted Mark Johnson to the role of minor league catching coordinator. Johnson had previously served as the manager for the AA Tennessee Smokies.

Other news and rumors from around MLB

Pitch Clock: It’s now official. MLB announced today that pitch clocks will be used in spring training games.

ESPN: ESPN announced today that they have signed former World Series Champion and three-time All-Star, Ryan Howard, to a multi-year agreement. Howard will serve as a Baseball Tonight analyst, further bolstering ESPN’s MLB coverage.

Machado: During the press conference for his signing, Machado addressed the Chicago media: “I wanted to be a Padre. This is where I wanted to be.” Funny, last I heard he had wanted to play on the east coast. Just sayin’.

Braves: Atlanta righty, Mike Soroka, has been shut down for an undetermined amount of time as he has experienced shoulder discomfort in his throwing arm. No MRI has been ordered, and the team suspects tendonitis.

Dodgers: Bad news for Dodgers’ fans, as Clayton Kershaw has been shut down “indefinitely” as he deals with some arm issue that the team hasn’t yet elaborated on. Dodgers’ media reports that Kershaw said (multiple times), “I’m just going to take a few days right now.” Kershaw offered no specifics on what “not feeling right” meant.

Giants: SF has claimed infielder, Hanser Alberto, off waivers from the Orioles. To make room, the Giants have designated righty, Jake Barrett, for assignment.

Twins: The Twins have signed free-agent utilityman, Marwin Gonzalez, to a two year, $21M deal. The Twins plan on using Gonzalez “all over the field” and expect him to reach 500 at-bats this season. Gonzalez makes the fourth player to sign an MLB contract with Minnesota this year, joining Jonathan Schoop, Nelson Cruz, and CJ Cron.

White Sox: The Sox have signed right-hander, Ervin Santana, to a minor league deal. Santana, who won 16 games in 2017 with the Twins, will earn a salary of $4.33M if he makes the major league team.
