Cubs complete trade with Rays for Jose Martinez

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs and Tampa Bay Rays have finally completed their trade that sent veteran first baseman Jose Martinez to the Northside in 2020.

The Cubs sent 19-year-old infield prospect Pedro Martinez (MLB Pipeline had him as the Cubs' 14th-best prospect) to the Rays and then today selected cash as the second part of the trade.

Martinez was hitless in 22 at-bats including one walk and seven strikeouts with the Cubs this past season.

For his career, he is a solid .289 hitter with 43 homers and 182 RBI.

Obviously, the Cubs are probably happy that they didn't have to give two prospects for Martinez. However, giving away cash during this difficult business environment regarding the COVID-19 pandemic is probably not ideal either.

Hopefully, the Cubs will get be able to see some quality hitting from Martinez in the future as he is under team control for two more seasons.

So far, the Rays certainly have won this trade.
