by -

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today activated right-handed pitcher Eddie Butler off of the 60-day disabled list. Right-handed pitcher Luke Farrell has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

Butler will be available for the Cubs tonight as they continue their four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Wrigley Field.

The 27-year-old Butler was placed on the 10-day disabled list on April 20 with a right groin strain and was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on June 11. He made five rehab starts with Triple-A Iowa as part of his return (0-3, 8.10 ERA), most recently pitching on Thursday in Memphis and allowing just one run on four hits and no walks with one strikeout in 5.0 solid innings pitched.

Butler was a member of Chicago’s 2018 Opening Day roster and went 0-1 with a 4.30 ERA (7 ER/14.2 IP) in six relief outings before landing on the disabled list. He was acquired by the Cubs from the Rockies on February 1, 2017 and has gone 4-4 with a 4.02 ERA (31 ER/69.1 IP) in 19 games (11 starts) with Chicago the last two seasons. Including his three seasons with the Rockies, Butler is 10-20 with a 5.75 ERA (146 ER/228.2 IP) in 55 career major league appearances, 39 as a starter and 16 in relief.

Farrell, 27, has gone 3-4 with a 5.17 ERA (18 ER/31.1 IP) in 20 outings, including two starts, with the Cubs this season. With Iowa, he has gone 0-2 with a 4.39 ERA (13 ER/26.2 IP) in six starts.
