MESA – The Chicago Cubs today acquired minor league first baseman Shendrik Apostel from the Pittsburgh Pirates for right-handed pitcher Duane Underwood Jr.

Apostel, 20, was signed by the Pirates out of Curaçao in July of 2017 and has played 68 games in the Dominican Summer League spanning the 2018-19 campaigns. The six-foot five-inch right-handed hitter batted .252 (55-for-218) with 13 doubles, 11 home runs and 45 RBI in the Pirates chain.

Apostel’s brother, Sherten, made his major league debut with Texas last season.

Underwood, 26, was designated for assignment on March 2. He was 1-1 with a 5.20 ERA (21 ER/36.1 IP) in 30 games (one start) for Chicago in all or part of three seasons from 2018-20.
